Domestic workers are the invisible backbone of countless households — caring, cleaning, and supporting families every day. Yet, their own lives often go unnoticed.

Shanta's Profile

Shanta (name changed), aged 43, lives in the Navalur Resettlement Tenement in Kancheepuram district. A domestic worker for 25 years, she is the sole breadwinner for her two children — one in college, the other in school.

She begins her day at 4:30 AM — washing, cooking, and cleaning in three households before noon. Earning just ₹11,000 per month, she juggles rent, school fees, groceries, and loan repayments.

After being evicted from her slum, her new locality lacks basic transport, making it harder to find work. After decades of labor, she has no savings, no security, and no pension.

Her story is not unique. Like many women in resettled communities, she is:

  • Overworked and underpaid
  • The only provider for her children
  • Burdened by informal debts from medical needs
  • Worried about the future: “What happens when I can’t clean anymore?”

The Problem:

  • Domestic work is physically demanding and age-sensitive
  • Most women lack formal skills or qualifications
  • Income is stagnant and doesn’t cover emergencies
  • Many are single, separated, or widowed — carrying the full financial load

But change is possible. The Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare has helped women become entrepreneurs — selling organic mixes, running food trucks, and starting petty shops. Over 100+ women are trained yearly and supported to start their businesses.

Now, we aim to raise ₹2.5 Lakh to train 40 more women in practical, income-generating skills to help them break free from financial dependency.

What They Will Learn: Beautician training, Millet foods, Herbal skincare, Bakery, Embroidery, Housekeeping — all certified courses based on their interest.
