From Workshop to Classroom – Ending Child Labour in Dharmapuram

In Dharmapuram, a 12-year-old boy was found working in a mechanic shop instead of going to school. His story reflected a harsh reality—child labour still denies many children their right to education and a safe childhood.Members of the Children’s Parliament, under TNDWWT, noticed his absence from school. They spoke with him and learned that his family’s financial struggles had forced him to work.

The case was brought to the Parliament meeting. With the help of local facilitators, they contacted Childline (1098). Soon, Childline staff and the local welfare department visited the shop and spoke with the boy and his family.

Through consistent follow-up, the boy was withdrawn from labour. His parents received counselling on the value of education, and the Trust helped arrange financial support to reduce the family’s burden. The boy was re-enrolled in school, where his classmates welcomed him warmly. The Children’s Parliament continues to check on him to ensure he stays in school. This case shows how child-led action, backed by community and official support, can protect children from exploitation and restore their right to learn and grow.
