Indian Migrant Mr. Kangaraj convicted to undergo 3 years’ imprisonment at Bahrain

Background of the case:

Mr. Kangaraj, an Indian Migrant Worker, was recruited by accused Recruiting Agents, Mr. Shaju alias Saju Kerala and Mrs. Valarmathi, for a Mason position in the Construction Sector in Bahrain. The agents arranged a Bahrain Visa for him but charged an exorbitant Recruitment Fee of Rupees Fifty Thousand. However, Mr. Kangaraj's life took a tragic turn when, after 25.02.2023, all contact with him was lost. It later came to light that he had been convicted and sentenced to three years of imprisonment in Bahrain. This conviction was because of a misunderstanding – Mr. Kangaraj had attempted to assist a child who had fallen at a playground. Regrettably, the child's mother misunderstood his intentions, leading to false implications and a severe miscarriage of justice.

Action taken:

In the face of this grave injustice, the Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust (TNDWWT) took swift and determined action to secure justice for Mr. Kangaraj. Legal Assistance was provided through the drafting and submission of petitions to a multitude of authorities, including the Union Minister for External Affairs, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and the Embassy of India in Bahrain. Furthermore, TNDWWT assisted in drafting and registering grievances through various channels, including MADAD Grievance ID, NRI Cell, and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS). The organization's unwavering commitment to justice was evident as they filed a Letter Petition on Public Interest before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

Impact:

"By reaching out to the Embassy of India in Bahrain and other relevant authorities, TNDWWT brought international attention to the injustice faced by Mr. Kangaraj. The organization's actions encompassed various legal channels, including the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, demonstrating their commitment to exploring all avenues to secure justice."
